Mile Marker #…7: Who Let Me Be In Charge?

In which: Maggie realizes the list of 10 great things did not include one of the greatest things of all!

When I was writing that list yesterday, I came up with 10 great things in my recent writing life and totally forgot to mention the one I’m most excited about!

I will be teaching a class at The Loft this winter — which, if you recall, is the place where I’m taking my big yearlong program — and I am SO excited! It’s my first official time teaching a writing class. (I’ve taught all kinds of other things, this is just the first time I’ll be teaching creative writing.)

I’m so excited! I have really great ideas for in-class exercises as well as source material to use as examples. The class is a 6-week crash course on creating compelling characters. Basically, the ultimate anti-Mary Sue course, starting in mid-November.

You can find the deets on the class here: Compelling Character Creation for Every Genre

I also found out yesterday that TWO people are already signed up for the class, which makes me really happy because The Loft is only just now starting their end-of-summer/fall programming. So, somebody found my lil class and signed up early — TWO somebodies!

I need a minimum of six students in order for the class to go on, and I’m feeling good about getting there. I’m also just really excited to make the class materials, because I would love to turn that into an evergreen self-paced course I could offer to The Loft or sell on my own. Plus, the call for submissions for their Winter/Spring sessions is coming up, so I might try to put together another proposal and see if I can teach something new. And/or teach this class again if it goes well? We shall see.

In other news, I’ve been stewing for a few days on an idea for an online magazine. It’s something I would love to put together, but I know it would be a TON of work and also a significant amount of money out-of-pocket. I know technically I could do calls for unpaid submissions, but that feels sleazy to me as someone who is also sending out short stories. I’ll have more to say on this at another time, but for now just know it’s knockin’ around in my noggin.

And with that, I’m going to go play Palia properly start my workday.

Til next time,
Mags
